– Egyptian star says he heaved a sigh of relief after draw against Nigeria – Player adds that they would not have been safe had they scored the winner against Nigeria

Egyptian forward, Mohamed Salah has said that he was happy that they did not win last week’s Afcon qualifying match against Nigeria in Kaduna. The AS Roma star winger’s last gap goal canceled out Oghenekaro Etebor’s 60th minute opener for Nigeria and would probably have scored a second had the referee not stopped the match when he was racing through with only a defender and the goalkeeper standing between him and the goalpost. But, in an interview with Al-Ahram Daily Newspaper on Sunday, March 27, the 23-year-old star player said that he breathed a sigh of relief when the referee blew the final whistle.

He said: “I breathed a sigh of relief after the ref blew the final whistle. “I was afraid when I received the ball and was heading directly towards the goal to score what could have been the winner. “Had I been able to score, I wouldn’t have been able to tell what exactly the fans’ response would be, that’s why I thanked God right after the final whistle.” Salah’s worries were confirmed when, after the match, NAIJ.com’s correspondent who covered the match was robbed of his belongings at the Ahmadu Bello stadium in Kaduna. Meanwhile, Nigeria walk a tight rope in qualifying for the 2017 edition of the biannual tournament following the withdrawal of Chad from the qualifying series over financial challenges. This means the three points which Nigeria collected against the Chadians have been deducted and they (Nigeria) remain second on the Group G log with 2 points.
